BRL Rodent Rederivation Program Update

Due to space constraints associated with the construction project the BRL is temporarily suspending its rodent cross foster rederivation program through July of 2024.  So what does this mean to your research program if you have to import a new line of mice or rats to UIC from an unapproved/non-commercial source?

  • If the mice or rats come from a source/colony of animals of the same health status as the BRL/UIC rodent colonies the mice or rats will be allowed to be imported and undergo quarantine at UIC. If the mice or rats clear quarantine they will be released to the general colony. If the mice or rats do not clear quarantine then the animals will need to be sent to a commercial company, such as Charles River, Taconic, Jax Labs, etc., for rederivation.
  • If the mice or rats come from a source/colony of animals that have murine pathogens that we exclude at UIC then the mice or rats will need to be sent directly to a commercial company, such as Charles River, Taconic, Jax Labs, etc., for rederivation. If you need assistance getting started with this process, we can help you connect with a company representative.

Note we will complete the rederivation process for any mice or rats in-house at this time.

Should you have any questions regarding the importation of non-commercial mouse or rat strains to UIC please contact Dr. Adams (cloboda@uic.edu).
